INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

DATE: September 6- November 22 (12 weeks)
TIME: Tuesdays 6:30-8pm

Have you ever been awed by the beauty and intricacies of sign language? Have you ever wished you could communicate more effectively with a deaf colleague, friend, or family member? Discover the joy of signing in this introductory course in American Sign Language (ASL). The course will include basic sign vocabulary and practice, as well as insights and information about Deaf culture. ASL is easy to learn, fun to use, and widely respected. Join us in a fascinating explo- ration of language and communication in a fun, supportive environment.

BEGINNING SPANISH

DATE: September 8 - December 1 (12 weeks)

Forget about memorizing word lists and verb conjugations! This class will quickly have you using the language to communicate with each other in a fun and light- hearted way. Simple, comprehensible Spanish, both spoken and written, becomes absorbed through repetition and practical usage. Whether you're new to the language or have forgotten what you learned in school and want a stress-free refresher, this class is for you.

SPANISH BOOK GROUP

DATE: September 8 - October 13 (6 weeks); October 20 - December 1 (6 weeks) - choose either or both!

Inspired by lively and successful Spanish book groups at ArtHaus this spring and summer, Jim Tripp offers 2 new opportunities to improve your Spanish skills this fall. High beginner/low intermediate Spanish speakers will enjoy reading a short Spanish language novel, while applying their skills and vocabulary to a discussion of the book in these fun and informal classes. Sign up for either or both.

ACCORDION BOOKMAKING

DATE: September 12-October 31 (8 weeks)
TIME: Mondays 6:30-8:30pm
INSTRUCTOR: Linda Elkins

Join local bookmaking artist, Linda Elkins, for this unique workshop. Create your own one-of-a-kind accordion book. Accordion books can be designed to stand or hang and can be viewed in their entirety or one page at a time. This style of book is an excellent vehicle for storytelling or presenting a sequence of ideas, or a col lection of images. As you explore, new ideas will surely unfold, just like the book you are creating! All skill levels are welcome.

MOVEMENT: Patterns of Equilibrium in the Martial Arts

DATE: September 12 - October 24 (7 weeks)
TIME: Mondays 7-8pm

One of the many benefits of studying the martial arts comes from the practice of sensitivity drills, or energy drills. This course will focus on placement, centering, and the "play" attributes of martial arts practices, drawing from three traditions (Filipino Kali, Wing Chun Kung Fu, and Brazilian Capoeira). Patterns of Equilib rium will lead you through cooperative drills that impact how we move, interact, and share in an environment of mindfulness. The social, cultural, and historical aspects of the martial arts will also be addressed in an environment that stresses safety, kind ness, learning and fun.

COUPLES CLAY WORKSHOP

Whether you are a couple of friends, or a romantic couple entranced by the pottery scene from the 1990s movie "Ghost"….this workshop is for you! A fun introduction to wheel-thrown pottery, this friendly three-session class will have you working in the new outdoor clay studio as well as the indoor space. (Will pottery lessons ignite your passion for one another? Maybe...but we're sure it will ignite a love for clay!)

THREE DANCES, FOUR NIGHTS

DATE: September 6-27 (4 classes)
TIME: Tuesdays 6:30-8pm

What's all the buzz about social dancing? Is it the flowing beauty of the waltz, the excit ing twists and turns of swing, or the smooth intimacy of the two-step? You bet! People are discovering how fun dancing with a partner really is, and you can too. This class covers the basics of these essential dances in four lessons. Alan's former students consistently describe his classes as "fun" and "easy," and as a bonus the class will be held in the spacious ballroom at Decorah's Elk's Lodge. (Signing up solo? PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP: GET TO KNOW YOUR CAMERA

DATE: September 17, 24 and October 1 (3 weeks)
TIME: Saturdays 9am-noon
INSTRUCTOR: Julie Strom
COST: $60 + $15 materials fee
LOCATION: ArtHaus Studio & various locations out in the field

Your quest to become the next Ansel Adams starts with this course! Let instructor Julie Strom walk you though the basic controls on your camera and help you under stand how to use them more effectively. Whether you have a Digital SLR or a point and shoot camera, you'll learn to compose and capture the image you want. Open to new or returning students who want to take their skills to the next level.

LIFE DRAWING OPEN STUDIO

DATE: November 1-December 13 (6 weeks, no class November 22)
TIME: Tuesdays 6:30-8:30pm
INSTRUCTOR: Ben Moore
COST: $75 + $30 materials fee for all classes in the session (If you cannot make all the sessions there is a $15 drop-in fee per class but pre-registration is required.)
LOCATION: ArtHaus Studio

This class is for students of all levels who want to sharpen their abilities to see and draw with an artist's perspective. Working from live models will allow you to improve and perfect your drawing skills of the human figure, while exploring various drawing materials including pencil, charcoal, pastel, and ink.

EUROPEAN FOLK DANCE

Stay warm as the weather gets colder in this popular two-hour dance session! Pine Wilson of Maritza will lead you on a tour of the traditional folk dances of Greece, Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Israel, France, and more. Beginners and returning students welcome, no partners needed!
