SPANISH BOOK GROUP

DATE: Jan 12 -Feb 9 (5 weeks)

Jim Tripp offers a lively way to improve your Spanish skills this winter. Students with basic Spanish skills will enjoy reading a very short Spanish language novel that uses a vocabulary of only 200 words to tell a 2200 word story. That vocabulary is then put to practical use in discussions of the book in five fun and informal classes.

INTERMEDIATE SPANISH BOOK GROUP

More confident Spanish speakers now have an opportunity to increase fluency at ArtHaus by conversing with others in this Intermediate level Spanish Book Group. Read a short Spanish language novel and apply your skills and vocabulary to a discussion of the book in these fun and informal classes.

POETRY ALOUD

Have you been tempted to read your own writing at the poetry slam, family gatherings, or other events? There are few things more rewarding than sharing your work with a live audience. This course will give you confidence to try it. We will cover performance techniques, using a microphone, and how to select and edit your material.

JEWELRY DESIGN CLASS (8 weeks)

We have gathered a group of talented local jewelry artists who will teach you various technical skills such as stringing, wire wrapping, stitching and more during your eight weeks together. Each class will feature a different technique resulting in a new piece of jewelry and fresh design ideas to keep you working all week on your new artistic passion.

SWEET WORDS: CRAFTING A VALENTINE'S DAY SONNET

"How do I love? Let me count the ways..." wrote Elizabeth Barrett Browning to her beloved. When one of Shakespeare's characters falls in love, he says that he's "turned sonnet." And truly, what better way to melt your honey's heart than poetry? Dive into some classic love poems, talk about what goes into a sonnet, and write your own, just in time for Valentine's Day.

INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

Have you ever been awed by the beauty of sign language? Have you wished you could communicate more effectively with a deaf colleague, friend, or family member? Discover the joy of signing in this introductory course. Basic sign vocabulary and practice, as well as insights and information about Deaf culture will all be included ASL is easy to learn, fun to use, and widely respected. Join us in a fascinating exploration of language and communication in a fun, supportive environment.

CONTINUING AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

If you've already had an introduction to American Sign Language (at ArtHaus or elsewhere), you know that signing is a fun and fascinating method of communication, with rewarding practical applications. This class is for those wishing to continue their study of ASL. Bring your signing skills to the next level and have fun practicing with your classmates in this twelve week class.

PAINTING SILK SCARVES WITH "SCARF IT UP"

DATE: February 16 & 23

Join this fun-loving and creative duo and learn their secrets to making beautiful silk scarves! In this two-session workshop we will explore painting the first week and steaming the second, transforming silk into a unique scarf that you can keep for yourself or give as a gift. Cost of workshop covers all materials and frame needed to repeat the process again and again.

INDIAN "BOLLYWOOD" DANCE

Heat up ArtHaus with the vibrant energy of this dynamic dance form! "Bollywood" dance is a fantastic fusion of traditional Indian folk dance, street-dance, jazz, and hip-hop, all with Indian classical dance as a foundation. Ufra Mir, choreographer and founder of Ethnic Beats at Luther College, will guide you in this colorful and very expressive movement class.

RECORDER ENSEMBLE

DATE: Feb 16 -April 19 (10 weeks)

PERFORMANCE: Sunday, April 22 at 2pm

Whether you're ready to refresh your skill, or can read music and would like to learn a new instrument in the recorder family, you'll enjoy this adult ensemble with master teacher Suzanne Ernst. The recorder is easy to learn and beginners can expect to play at the intermediate level within the span of this course. (Need a recorder? Suzanne will bring a variety of inexpensive recorders to try the first night of class, which can then be purchased at Kephart's, along with The Sweet Pipes Recorder book.)

WRITING: THE MEMOIR TOOLBOX

This course will provide helpful tools to make writing about your life easier and more fun. Explore the difference between a family history and a memoir; how to write about people without making them hate you; adding humor; and making the best use of your writing time. ST. PATTY'S DAY WORKSHOP: SIPPING STEINS

Back by popular demand! Sample beers from the Oneota Community Co-op, then make your own stein. Learn about the shapes of mugs historically used for drinking beer and get your hands dirty constructing your own Irish tankard! No experience required.

Join local artist, John Snyder, for an exploration and education in mark-making during this eight-week session. Develop confidence in your own natural drawing style whether it be traditional or idiosyncratic in nature. Explore a wide variety of drawing materials and a bit of paint along the way. No experience necessary.

Embrace the art of stitchery! Get to know your machine better as you undertake creative and functional projects that fit your lifestyle. Expand your sewing skills to include topstiching, bias, hemming, applique, patchwork, and more. Supply fee includes six yards of fabric, thread, and other materials. Bring your machine and sewing scissors. New and returning students welcome.

Belinda Greenwood will teach the Wu Tai Chi Chuan form she learned from Master Zee Wen of Shanghai. Daily practice of tai chi has many possible health benefits including increased energy, lower blood pressure, improved balance and cardiovascular fitness. Beginners are welcome and may join any Wednesday class.
