From First Fridays to Poetry Slams, ArtHaus has events that are fun for everyone. So dust off those dancing shoes, shake off those work-day blues, and come on down and check out our events! You'll have fun, we promise.

FIRST FRIDAY: The Roe Family Singers

Join us for the last of our summer courtyard concerts! The award-winning group hailed as “the new wave of old-time” (CityPages) returns to ArtHaus after their soldout show here last summer received rave reviews. Married musicians Kim and Quillan Roe lead this 21st century jug band, offering traditionalsounding originals rooted in bluegrass, folk, and genres once labeled “hillbilly.” • 2011-’12 McKnight Artist Fellowship for Performing Musicians • 2012 & 2010 World’s Best Jug Band, Battle of the Jugbands • 2006 Best Female Vocalist Kim Roe, City Pages

POETRY SLAM

DATE: Friday, September 27
TIME: 8pm
COST: $5/$3 students
LOCATION: Decorah Elks Lodge

The ArtHaus Poetry Slam is a not-to-be-missed Decorah event, welcoming anyone to participate. A featured artist will kick off the evening, followed by the non-competitive “Original Voices,” (2 minutes or less of your own poetry) and ending with the “Slam” (a good-natured competition complete with prizes and Applause-o-Meter). September’s Poetry Slam coincides with the Luther College Writers Festival so expect to hear from local favorites as well as poets in town for the Festival! Call ArtHaus to sign up to perform. Recommended for adults, ages 16 and up.

ArtHaus is delighted to feature a new body of work by acclaimed Winona-based printmaker and artist, Preston Lawing. An instructor of drawing, painting, and creativity at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota for the past 17 years, Lawing creates and exhibits his artwork, and continues to lecture nationally and internationally. His newest artworks are inspired by recent travels to Italy this past spring. While you explore Lawing’s work, enjoy wine tasting compliments of the Oneota Community Co-op.

ArtHaus is pleased to partner with KWLC Radio in presenting Count This Penny, from Madison, WI. Part old school Emmylou, part Civil Wars, the “Appalachian Pop” of Count This Penny features warm harmonies, great vocals, and beguiling stories, both gritty and charming. After their appearance on A Prairie Home Companion, their EP took the #6 spot on the iTunes singer-songwriter chart and they’ve been playing to sold out houses ever since. Seating is limited and reservations are strongly recommended.

Come to listen or to tell your story in seven minutes or less, with no script or notes, inspired by the theme of the evening: “Travel.” Everybody loves a good story -- come to tell yours, or just sit back and enjoy! WATER STREET MUSIC SERIES: Shakespeare in Song and Sound

A vivid evening of words and music, both traditional and newly-composed, inspired by the sonnets and songs of Shakespeare. This original collaboration between composer Brooke Joyce, early music specialist Kathy Reed, Renaissance scholar Kate Narveson, theatre director Kristen Underwood, as well as student musicians, composers, and performers, will lead you on an adventure in song from Elizabethan England to the present and back again.
