From First Fridays to Poetry Slams, ArtHaus has events that are fun for everyone. So dust off those dancing shoes, shake off those work-day blues, and come on down and check out our events! You'll have fun, we promise.

NEW YEAR'S EVE with The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra and Mike McAbee

DATE: December 31
TIME: Saturday, 7pm
COST: $15 in advance (available at Fancy Pants)/$20 at the door

Dance in the new year! Mike McAbee will kick off the party, then The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra takes the stage with their wildly dance-able blend of swing, rock, jazz, and bug-eyed bluegrass. Proceeds will benefit ArtHaus. For more information: (563) 382-8908.

DANCE AT THE OPERA HOUSE: Pistol Whippin Party Penguins

LOCATION: Steyer Opera House in the Hotel Winnesheik

Don't let their irreverent name fool you! The Penguins offer seriously good foot-stompin' bluegrass. ArtHaus is excited to present this Minneapolis-based band at the Steyer Opera House where there's plenty of room on the dance floor and all ages are welcome.

FIRST FRIDAY: New Work by Emily Temte

Not only was Emily Temte the winner of last year's Emerging Artists' Exhibition, but she received top prize at the 3rd Annual Southeast Minnesota Regional Exhibition this summer. ArtHaus invites you to view this Luther College junior's compelling style of drawing, in an exhibition entitled "Fifty," featuring new works on paper.

Witness the birth of a new collaboration when Decorah's own jazz master Tom Bourcier partners up with the sparkling and dynamic cabaret songstress, Lynne Rothrock. Expect an exciting mix of music from traditional jazz to contemporary cabaret and everything in between. Bring your own refreshments and settle in for a musical treat.

POETRY SLAM

ArtHaus is pleased to welcome past Slam winner and ArtHaus teaching artist JUNE MELBY as this month's featured artist. Her writing has been heard on NPR and published by Water~Stone Review and National Lampoon Magazine, among others. June will kick off the evening, performing some of her own work, and then it's YOUR turn! Perform two minutes or less of your own poetry in "Original Voices," or compete in the "Slam" (a good-natured contest complete with prizes and Applause-o-Meter). Call ArtHaus to sign up to perform. Recommended for adults, ages 16 and up.

FIRST FRIDAY: TalkStory, featuring John Dingley

DATE: March 2

Our favorite Welsh stonemason and storyteller John Dingley will start us off with a few of his favorites. Then you're encouraged to put your name in the hat to tell your true story, inspired by the theme of the evening, "Blarney." (Doesn't everyone have a story that sounds invented but is true?) Tell yours in seven minutes or less with no script or notes. Recommended for adults, ages 16 and up. Hosted by Kyra Bellrichard. BAKER LONDON PRESENTS: Trent Romens

DATE: March 9

Trent Romens began playing guitar at a young age and was introduced to blues music when he was 11. Since then, Trent has saturated himself in the blues and the music that genre has inspired, resulting in his own hybrid of rock, blues and soul. Now 19, Trent has burst onto the scene, playing 13 festivals and 2 headlining festival sets in his very first summer season. Trent Romens' debut album, Aware, is on the Grammy Entry List for Best Blues Album.

"Baker London Presents" was created to support and promote emerging artists and provide a venue for live music in Decorah. Founded in honor of Baker London's alter ego, Trevor Grimm, "Baker London Presents" aims to ensure his legacy will live on through this series of concerts at ArtHaus. BYOB ok.

FIRST FRIDAY: 2nd Annual Emerging Artists' Exhibition

DATE: April 6

Join us for a celebration of emerging artistic talent in the Driftless Region. We are pleased to unveil the best of the best artworks created by emerging artists (ages 18-23) who submitted their strongest 2-D and 3-D artworks to our juried show. Last year we had nearly 70 submissions from three states, representing 6 different colleges and universities. For more information about entering artwork, check our website after January 2nd.

The ArtHaus Poetry Slam has become a not-to-be-missed Decorah event, welcoming anyone to participate. A featured artist will kick off the evening, followed by the non-competitive "Original Voices," (2 minutes or less of your own poetry) and ending with the "Slam" (a good-natured competition complete with prizes and Applause-o-Meter). Call ArtHaus to sign up to perform! Recommended for adults, ages 16 and up.

UPSTART CROW THEATREWORKS PRESENTS: The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare

DATE: April 27-29
TIME: Friday and Saturday at 7:30, Saturday and Sunday at 2:00
COST: $5/$3 students

Filled with unforgettable characters (Shylock, the Jewish moneylender; the loyal but unlucky Antonio; his lovesick friend Bassanio; the beautiful and brilliant Portia, and so many more), The Merchant of Venice is the classic tale of justice and mercy, prejudice, friendship and love. This play will have you in its grip from start to finish, surprising you with its humor and leaving you pondering the way we treat one another long after the curtain call. Performed by a cast of Upstart Crow students, grades 7-12.

We are delighted to partner with the Hotel Winneshiek in offering this year's fundraiser and celebration of the creative season: spring! We've moved this popular event to the beautiful Steyer Opera House where you can enjoy live music, a sampler of ArtHaus student artwork and performances, and bid on the work of outstanding regional artists in silent and live auction. The Hotel is generously providing the scrumptious hors d'oeuvres and gorgeous setting as we raise money for the ArtHaus Scholarship Fund. Come for the good company and original artwork, or just to show your support for your local art center!
