Thrifty Threads: Design a Handbag or Giftbag out of Vintage Ties

Tell your grandmother to save grandpa’s old ties because we will turn those heirloom thrift store finds and fashion faux pas into works of art! Whether you’re looking for a fun gift bag for a bottle of or you want a new handbag that’s sure to be a conversation starter, join an artistic duo of Luther students, Alyssa and Kristi, for an enjoyable evening creating fun and functional works of art. Sewing experience is welcomed but not necessary. Bring your sewing machine, or use one of ours.

Chocolate, Wine and Beading with Bijoux

What better way to chase away those winter blues than chocolate, wine and jewelry! Bijoux designers Vicki and Karen Berland are known for their artistic beading and beautiful designs. Enjoy a glass of wine and some chocolate as Bijoux teaches you to create some new jewelry to wear on your next evening out on the town. No experience necessary.

Join us for an evening of warmth and creativity as we sample teas from the Oneota Community Co-op and create funky tea towels--for your own kitchen or to give as a hostess gift when you feel it is time to repay a visit to those winter holiday houseguests!

Design Your Own Furoshiki Wrapping Cloths

What better way to spend Earth Day than by creating reusable gift-wrapping cloths with fiber artist Robin Schone Hengesteg. Using various resist, dyes and discharge techniques, Robin will teach you to adorn fabric so that these Japanese style wrapping cloths are beautiful artworks in and of themselves, regardless of what’s inside the wrapping.

Patchy Purses

Express yourself utilitarian style! In this class you will choose and combine scrappy fabrics to make a fun small bag to hold coins, jewelry, and other small treasures. Rachelle Branum will teach you how to piece designer and imported fabrics in a surprising new way, creating a functional artwork in one evening. Previous sewing experience is welcomed but not necessary. Bring your own sewing machine or use one of ours.

Art for a Cause: Artful Acts of Kindness

DATE: 2nd Sunday of the month
TIME: 6:15-8:15pm
INSTRUCTOR: Rachelle Branum
COST: $5/person (suggested donation)

This monthly workshop, hosted by teaching artist Rachelle Branum, focuses on creative projects and the art of giving back to the community. No artistic experience is necessary to join the cause and each workshop is open to the public. There is $5 suggested donation for participants to help cover the cost of supplies needed. Pre-registration each month is appreciated. Previous projects include making newborn jersey knot hats out of recycled t-shirts for the Winneshiek Medical Center; fleece blankets donated to the resource center serving battered women and children; and notecards for residents of area nursing homes.
