TINY MASTERS: Open Studio

AGE: 2-3 years
TIME: Thursdays 9:00-10:00am

COST: $55/one session or $100 for both sessions if registered by September 10

Has your two-year-old told you “Enough with the crayons, already!”? This art exploration class is designed for children who are ready to make the transition to attending a class independently in addition to exploring new art materials. The focus is on a process-oriented art experience where children are encouraged to explore various media in an open studio setting. Painting, playdough or clay, collage and printmaking are a few examples of the stations they will have to choose from during their hour of studio time.

Puppet Making for Mini-Masters and Little Masters

Puppets, puppets, puppets! Students will create finger puppets complete with their very own mini-stage, transform spare footwear into sock puppets with personality, and explore papier-mâché rod puppets in this class inspired by Eulenspiegel Puppets.

Ripped from the Headlines: 2-D Exploration

DATE: September 14-October 19
AGE: 9-12 years
TIME: Mondays 3:30-4:30pm

Many artists are creating artwork in response to the world around them. Current events often influence artists in their choice of materials and methods. We’ll view artworks inspired by both history and contemporary issues, then create our own works responding to the world we live in and our place within it.

Funky Junk: Mixed Media Exploration

DATE: September 14-October 19
AGE: 12-15 years
TIME: Mondays 4:45–5:45pm
INSTRUCTOR: Lea Lovelace

Robert Rauschenberg started it when he painted a quilt and bed sheet into his canvas. Contemporary artists are blurring the boundaries between art and junk. We’ll join fine art materials (like paint, pastels, and printing) with found objects we collect ourselves through a field trip to the Depot and recycling bins. We will explore turning our original 2-D works into 3-D works with found treasures. All that is necessary is an open mind and some great adhesive!

Has your child transferred his or her fingerprints onto your walls for years? Let ArtHaus instructors focus that desire to transfer by teaching your child the art of printmaking. Kids will create original designs as they learn gyotaku fish/frog printing, stamping, block printing, and more. Each child will create a printed t-shirt, a set of cards, an artistic pillowcase, and artwork to hang in your home gallery!

Fashion Sense: Mixed Media Exploration

DATE: November 2-December 7
AGE: 9-12 years
TIME: Mondays 3:30-4:30pm
INSTRUCTOR: Rachelle Branum

No passport necessary, although we will travel around the world to explore the art of fashion in this mixed media class. While clothes function as protection from the elements, they can also express creativity and individuality. Explore global fashion, make a mask, and print your own t-shirt.

The Art of Drawing Comics

DATE: November 2-December 7
AGE: 13-16 years
TIME: Mondays 3:30-4:45pm
INSTRUCTOR: Richard Merritt

Whether you are a fan of Spiderman, connoisseur of Scooby Doo, or prefer Japanese Manga, you will appreciate learning how to tell a story through the art of the comic book. Associate Professor of Art and visual artist, Richard Merritt, will teach you how to create illustrated stories that may make you the next great graphic novelist!

Family Workshop: Handmade Kiln-Fired Clay Ornaments

DATE: Sunday, December 6
TIME: 2:00-4:00pm
INSTRUCTOR: Jenna Haug
COST: $10/person

Change out of your Sunday best and bring the kids to play with clay! ArtHaus instructor and local ceramic artist Jenna Haug will teach you the properties of clay and how to explore texture and underglaze as decoration. Then you and the kids can mold mud to make ornaments for your tree. At the end of our workshop you will have some keepsakes to help you remember this special time of year and the special afternoon you spent together. (Children must be accompanied by an adult.)
